REDDING, Calif. -- The city of Redding has approved the creation of a downtown entertainment zone, allowing individuals aged 21 and older to carry open alcohol containers purchased from licensed businesses. This initiative follows the passage of Senate Bill 969 in January, which permits California cities to establish designated areas for open alcohol consumption.
The proposed boundaries of the zone extend from Eureka Way to Lincoln Street. The assistant city manager stated that the initiative aims to stimulate local economies, a prospect that has excited some downtown businesses.
"It brings all the community together with all the restaurants so we can all kinda co-market and share equally all businesses and thoughts and ideas," said Leon Draper, one of the owners of The Shack.
While Draper and his co-owner are enthusiastic about the changes, they acknowledge concerns about responsible drinking. City staff plans to collaborate with the Redding Police Department and Alcoholic Beverage Control to manage the zone, including decisions on permissible drinks and containers.
The entertainment zone will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with signs clearly marking its boundaries. Draper expressed optimism about the potential growth of downtown and his business along with it.
