Cathlamet Library News

HELLO. We had a wonderful time at Puget Island Fire station for National Night Out. A big thank you to those who met with us at our table and received a library card. We signed up 25 new members. A big thank you goes out to Puget Island Fire for their support.

AUGUST POP-UPS. Do you like ice-pops, bubbles, music, and face painting? We've had three August Pop-ups so far this month in front of the library building and have only three remaining from 2-5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, Saturday, Aug. 16, and Saturday, Aug. 30. See you there.

COUNTY FAIR. The library will have a booth near the front gate entrance at the upcoming 117th Annual Wahkiakum County Fair. Please stop by to get a library card, ask any library questions you need answered, enjoy an Otter Pop, or just chat. We'd enjoy seeing you. The fair is at Skamokawa Fairgrounds from Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 21 - 23.

PEOPLE'S VOICE. Local Little Island resident Martie visited our table at the West Wahkiakum Farmers Market this past Friday. She was sharing her plight in having lost her library card and not being able to use it for the 15 percent off discounts. "After 15 years, I realized I lost my library card when I went to redeem 15 percent off at Patty Cakes," she said. "While attending the Friday Market in Rosburg I was greeted by a library volunteer, and, in a flash, I had my new card." We were so happy to get Martie her library card right then and there at the Market. Why should it be difficult?

FICTION PICK. Our highlighted pick is by Booker-prize winning author Marlon James' book "Black Leopard, Red Wolf." This is the first book of the Dark Star trilogy. Describing the book as "gripping" and "action-packed," the New York Times' Michiko Kakutani said, "The literary equivalent of a Marvel Comics universe, filled with dizzying, magpie references to old movies and recent TV, ancient myths and classic comic books, and fused into something new and startling by his gifts for language and sheer inventiveness." The San Francisco Chronicle stated, "This is the kind of immersive fantasy saga that develops a devoted following; an impressive display of inspired storytelling that's only just getting started."

KID PICK. This week, we highlight the 40-page fun book "Don't Bother the Bears!" by Jonno Heyne. "Don't Bother the Bears!" is a story of a bear and his friends who live in the woods and must resist the urge to eat some lost scouts. It is a read-out-loud book with vocabulary words that might be fun to have the young ones figure out and wonderful illustrations to go along with the story, helping make it a nicely disguised learning opportunity.

WORK SPECIALIST. Diana Zimmerman from Employ Wahkiakum is at the Cathlamet Library every Thursday from 3-5 p.m. to help job seekers with job searches, resumes, cover letters, and more. Please come on in. She's there for you.

DISCOUNTS. Get 15 percent off by showing your Cathlamet Library card at the following businesses: Patty Cakes, The Spar, The Video Store, Little Woo's, JJ's Pizza & Mohr, and Naselle Coffee. See each business for details. Interested in teaming-up with the library and being part of the 15 percent off group? Call the library at 360-795-3254.

LIBRARY CARDS. Cathlamet library cards are free for all Wahkiakum residents. The library has increased to 1,570 members. We thank you for your patronage. The Cathlamet Public Library is located at 115 Columbia St. and is open Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.
