Major motorway shut both ways after crash with emergency services at the scene

A major motorway is shut in both directions following a collision.

Emergency services were called to reports of an incident on the M66 near Bury at around 10.30pm on Sunday.

Police, paramedics and fire crews are in attendance and have stopped traffic in both directions from J3 for Pilsworth to J4 for the M60 and Simister Island.

It is not known yet when the roads will re-open.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M66 is closed southbound between J3 and M60/M62 J18 Simister Island. The northbound carriageway is closed within M60/M62 J18.

"We are assisting Greater Manchester Police in responding to a collision."

An update on Intrix read: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M66 in both directions from J3 Pilsworth Road (Hollins) to J4 M60 J18 (Simister Island)."
