The upgrade follows extensive testing by the Environment Agency and forms part of a wider trend of improvement across the South West.

South West Water confirmed that 96.2% of bathing waters in the region are now rated Excellent or Good, with Swanpool and Maenporth among 13 sites in Devon and Cornwall showing progress this year. The company has maintained 100% bathing water compliance for the fifth consecutive year, making the South West one of the cleanest regions in England for beachgoers.
Richard Price, Managing Director of Wastewater Services at South West Water, said: "We have some of the very best bathing waters in Europe here in the South West and we're really pleased to see more beaches improving and 96.2% now rated Excellent or Good. We're playing our part and more with a record-breaking £760 million investment to reduce the use of storm overflows and strengthen our wastewater network."
The improvements come as part of South West Water's £760 million investment programme, aimed at reducing storm overflow use and enhancing water quality over the next five years. While factors such as agriculture, wildlife, and climate-driven weather patterns still pose challenges, the company says it is focused on areas where it can make the biggest positive impact.
For locals and visitors alike, the news means cleaner, safer waters at two of Cornwall's most scenic beaches -- perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, and enjoying the natural beauty of the coastline.
