Exact date and time the clocks go back as British Summer Time ends | Devon Live

The clocks will go back once again next week as the UK returns to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) as winter draws in.

The changing of the clocks will signal the end of British Summer Time (BST), where clocks went forward an hour back in March.

Most smartphones, digital devices and some modern cars will update the time automatically when it changes next week; however, analogue clocks will need to be switched manually.

Other clocks, such as alarm clocks and non-smart appliances, will also need adjusting.

Clocks will go back by an hour on Sunday, October 26, at 2am, meaning everyone will get an extra hour in bed.

GMT and BST have been used in the UK for over a hundred years; however, before these standardised time zones were implemented, each city would have a different local time (also known as solar time), reports BristolLive.

In practice, this meant that, for example, Leeds was six minutes and 10 seconds behind London, Bristol was 10 minutes behind London, and Barrow was 12 minutes and 54 seconds behind London.

Times were established by the movement of the sun and when it would reach the highest point in the sky, this created a unique situation where guards on horse-drawn carriages would carry timepieces to adjust the time as they travelled east to west, or vide versa, across the breadth of the UK.

Once railways were constructed, a standard time was essential, and London Time was adopted as the standard time, eventually becoming GMT. This was adopted into law in 1880.

During the First World War, BST would be introduced and was adopted into law in 1916.

Using two different time zones allows for longer days in the summer, benefiting from an extra hour of daylight.

However, it means that there is less daylight in winter, which could encourage people to sleep earlier in the evening.

The use of Daylight Saving Time (DST) has been widely debated in the UK; however, it remains in place.

Other countries use DST, but the dates when countries change their clocks are different to when the UK changes the clocks.

Clocks in the UK will go forward once again on March 29, 2026.
