Heat, humidity could fuel severe storm threat in coming days for Chicago area

The threat of severe weather in the Chicago area fizzled on Thursday, but that chance could return this weekend.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, a swath of the Chicago area could be at a "marginal" risk of severe storms late Saturday and into Sunday morning, with the chance expanding across the area as a front sweeps through the region.

Before those storms arrive however, hot and humid conditions are expected to dominate Chicago's forecast on Friday and Saturday. High temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team, and dew points of nearly 70 degrees could push heat indices into the upper-90s.

Saturday is expected to be the warmest day of the weekend, but Saturday night could see some changes arrive, as showers and storms could potentially develop over Wisconsin, sweeping southward over the Chicago area into Sunday morning.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, a swath of the area is at a "marginal" risk of severe storms, the first of five levels of risk assessment issued by the SPC. That area is focused primarily to the west of Interstate 55, impacting the western and southwestern suburbs of Chicago.

Still, storms could form area wide during the overnight hours, bringing with them the chance of heavy rain and gusty winds, according to forecast models.

In fact, that could be merely the first in a series of shower and storm threats in coming days, as the forecast includes those chances each day into the middle part of next week.

Temperatures are expected to cool slightly, but will still be above their seasonal averages, rising into the upper-80s or perhaps eclipsing 90 degrees in some locations.

That weather pattern could persist into next weekend, though chances of rain begin to diminish the further out the forecast goes.

According to the Climate Prediction Center, there is a strong probability that temperatures could remain above normal well into August, with that pattern holding strong over the upper Midwest and even into the northeast until later in the month.

Precipitation levels could remain right around their normal levels according to officials, though a cooling pattern could impact that late in the month.
