New 'The Odyssey' Cast Member Will Bring Anarchy to Christopher Nolan Movie

Ryan Hurst has joined the ever-growing ensemble of Christopher Nolan's swords and sandals action epic, The Odyssey, which is currently in production in Morocco, and stars Matt Damon as the legendary hero Odysseus. Most famously known for his roles in FX's Sons of Anarchy and AMC's The Walking Dead, Hurst is just the latest addition to an already stacked cast, per The Hollywood Reporter. The actor's role has not been disclosed yet, so it's unclear how he will fit into the story, which adapts Homer's ancient Greek poem of the same name.

The poem tells the story of Odysseus as he embarks on a ten-year trek home to Ithaca in the aftermath of the decade-long Trojan War. He faces several trials and tribulations along the way, not least of which includes the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, seeking revenge on the traveller after he blinds his son, the cyclops Polyphemus. Nolan's adaptation is expected to focus on Odysseus' perilous journey, but a massive prop piece glimpsed on set suggests the backstory might also be addressed, either in a prologue or flashback sequences.

Among the most significant facets of Nolan's films is his ability to find the perfect cast, and these are the actors he has worked with the most.

While the identity of Hurst's character remains under wraps (or, in this case, protected under armor), there are plenty of roles to fill in the sprawling saga. The actor has shown versatility in his previous roles, with Harry "Opie" Winston in Sons of Anarchy being the epitome of the 'strong-silent' type, while his turn as Beta in The Walking Dead demonstrated a more villainous side, which could spell trouble for Odysseus if he takes on the role of an antagonist. Other memorable roles for Hurst include Remember the Titans, We Were Soldiers, and more recently, playing Milligan in the Disney+ series Mysterious Benedict Society.

Who Plays Who in Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey'?

While Damon is locked in for the lead role in The Odyssey, other names in the star-studded ensemble include Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton, Bill Irwin, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. This month also saw the arrival of a beloved Shōgun star to the cast, though that role is currently unknown too, with many of the actors announced for undisclosed roles so far.

While Universal Pictures has not shared official confirmation of which characters the actors will be playing, Greek media outlets have reportedly lifted the lid on some of their identities. Among them is Tom Holland, who is apparently playing Odysseus and Penelope's adult son, Telemachus. In the poem, Telemachus goes in search of his wandering father, and a recent photo from the set of the upcoming adaptation reveals Holland will be journeying by ship for at least part of that. Where he ends up will become clear when The Odyssey reaches theaters on July 17, 2026.
