Basketball: Gothenburg shuts down Lady Irish
by: James Parrish - Dec. 20, 2024
The North Platte St. Pat's Lady Irish couldn't get anything to start the game against Gothenburg on Thursday and they couldn't get back in it as they lost, 61-21, at the McGahan Activities Center.
Ellie Wyatt and Zoe Beveridge made three-pointers in the first 75 minutes to give Gothenburg (6-0) a 6-0 lead. Taryn O'Hare got a layup off a steal. Alex Beveridge made a free throw before Lindly Anderson and Rileigh McClay scored baskets to end the first quarter as the Swedes pitched a shutout in the opening period.
St. Pat's (2-5) didn't get on the board until halfway through the second quarter when Cara Roberg made a three from the corner that made it 21-3. Sophia Baca scored the next two baskets for the Irish before Gothenburg scored the last five of the half.
The good news for St. Pat's in the third quarter was they more than doubled their output from the first half. The bad news was the Swedes nearly doubled theirs and it was 48-18 heading into the fourth quarter. Gothenburg pushed the deficit to 40 points in the fourth before they emptied their bench.
Next, the Irish will play at the Grand Island Central Catholic Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27-28.
