Have a punny name for a snowplow? Enter the city of Portland's contest

The city of Portland has 56 snowplows, and they're looking for names for five of them.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation is holding its first ever snowplow naming contest this winter and inviting the public to get creative (and silly) with their suggestions.

People are invited to submit their "most creative, punniest, and wintry ideas," with the top five snowplow names selected as winners announced in February.

Submit your snowplow name idea using an online form no later than 5 p.m. Jan. 5. There's no limit to the number of submissions you can enter.

Transportation bureau staff will pick the top 20 names and open those up for public voting in mid-January.

In 2023, when the Massachusetts Department of Transportation invited students to participate in a "Name a Snowplow" contest, the winning names included such gems as Edward Blizzardhands, Fast and Flurryous, Sleetwood Mac and The Mayplower.

The public has helped the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission name some of its snowplows with names that included CTRL-SALT-DELETE and Clearopathtra.

In Idaho, roadways are cleared with the help of plows with names like Antisnowcial and No More Mr. Ice Guy.

The Portland contest doesn't list any prizes for the winners, but having your pun on the side of a snowplow might be reward enough.
