Hoping for no Skyfall as storm Adel approaches on yellow warning

The strong depression, bringing much needed rain but also hail, is heading to Cyprus and will be affecting the island from late tonight onwards, after causing extensive flooding and significant damage across many areas of Greece, including suburbs in the capital Athens. It formed over southern Italy.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning, from 2300 tonight to 1700 tomorrow (Sunday), noting that 'isolated heavy thunderstorms are expected to affect the island at intervals, initially the west and north and gradually across the country', as hail is possible in the areas of the storms. Surface wind will be variable but strengthening, with the precipitation rate expected to range between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour.

But before Adele approaches, currently moving in the northeast, a high pressure system is dominant, with harmful thin particles of dust persisting in the atmosphere.

As the day changes from slightly overcast to showery and blustery, with winds turning strong force four to five in windward regions, over slight seas, temperatures will rise to 25 degrees Celsius inland and in coastal regions and 13 on the mountains.

Αdel will bring local showers and isolated storms this evening, with the possibility of hail and sleet on the highest reaches of the Troodos mountains. Winds will mainly be light to moderate southwesterly to northwesterly, force three to four, turning strong force four to five in windward regions, over slight to moderate seas. Temperatures will drop to 11 Celsius inland, 14 in coastal regions and 8 on the mountains.

A similar outlook is forecast tomorrow, with local, heavy showers and isolated storms, with the possibility of hail in the areas of the storms, as variable winds turn stronger. Sleet might fall on the highest reaches of Troodos.

Showers are expected across the country at intervals on Monday too, before Tuesday sees clear skies in most areas, but rain on Troodos.

There will be a drop in temperatures tomorrow, with no significant change through to early next week, ranging near the seasonal average.
