TRACKING THE TROPICS: Tropical Depression Seven forms; forecasters monitor tropical wave

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Depression Seven has formed and could become a tropical storm later Wednesday.

Tropical Depression Seven formed over the Central Atlantic Wednesday morning around 5 a.m.

The center of TD7 was located at latitude 13.7 north, longitude 45.9, about 1185 miles east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands.

Maximum sustained winds were near 35 mph with higher gusts. The system was moving to the west at 13 mph.

The system had an estimated minimum central pressure of 1007 mb or 29.74 inches.

Forecasters expect Tropical Storm Gabrielle to develop in the next 24 hours.

Live 5 First Alert Meteorologist Joey Sovine says early computer models keep the system away from the United States, but that they will continue to monitor changes in the forecast.

As for the second system, a tropical wave located a couple hundred miles east-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands is producing some disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

Forecasters say some slow development of this system is possible toward the middle and end of this week as the system moves west at about 15 to 20 mph. Environmental conditions are only marginally conducive for development at this time.

It is moving from the eastern to the central portion of the tropical Atlantic. Wednesday morning, the odds of development in the next two days for this system were near 10% and the odds of development in the next week were holding steady around 20%.

These systems come in the days after the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, which has been quiet for the Lowcountry, especially compared to last year.

The next names on the list after Gabrielle are Humberto, Imelda, Jerry and Karen.
