Srinagar, Sept 13: Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar on Saturday held a solemn condolence meeting at the Medical Education Unit (MEU) to pay tribute to Prof (Dr) Ashiq Hussain Naqashbandi, former Principal and Dean of GMC Srinagar, who passed away early morning. The gathering was attended by faculty members, administrative staff, medical superintendents, and paramedical personnel, all united in mourning the loss of a highly respected figure in the medical community.
Prof Naqashbandi completed his MBBS and M.S. in General Surgery from GMC Srinagar, followed by super-specialisation (MCh) in Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) from CMC Vellore. He was among the first CVTS surgeons in Jammu and Kashmir. Joining GMC Srinagar as faculty in 1981, he rose to become Head of the Department of Surgery. In February 2005, he was appointed Principal and Dean of GMC Srinagar, serving until May 2006.
The GMC Srinagar community mourns the loss of Prof Naqashbandi and prays for the eternal peace of his soul. His departure has created a void in the institution, but his enduring legacy will continue to inspire generations of future medical professionals.
During the tribute session, Principal/Dean Dr Iffat Hassan highlighted Prof Naqashbandi's significant contributions to the institution and the medical field. Her remarks reflected the deep respect and admiration he commanded among peers and students alike.
Prof Dr Iqbal Saleem, Head of the Department of Surgery, shared heartfelt condolences and fond memories of Prof Naqashbandi's dedication and mentorship. Similarly, Prof Sabiya Majeed, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, paid homage to his lasting influence on the medical community. Prof Dr Afroz Khan expressed profound sadness, highlighting his remarkable leadership qualities and the void left by his passing. Various other faculty members also paid their respects and eulogised his contributions.
As a mark of respect, attendees observed two minutes of silence to honour Prof Naqashbandi's memory, reflecting on his invaluable service and legacy.
The GMC Srinagar family extends its deepest sympathies to Prof Naqashbandi's bereaved family during this difficult time, remembering his profound impact on the institution and the medical fraternity.
Meanwhile, GMC Anantnag expressed condolences over the demise of Prof Naqshbandi. A condolence meet was held at MMABM Associated Hospital GMC Anantnag to remember the great stalwart of medical sciences from Jammu and Kashmir.
GMC Anantnag Principal, Prof Dr Rukhsana Najee,b described Prof Naqshbandi as "one of the greatest medical teachers" in Jammu and Kashmir. She prayed for the departed soul and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family.
Meanwhile, Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Itoo, in her condolence message, described late Prof Ashiq Hussain as a "visionary academician known for his distinguished service and contributions to medical education and surgery" in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Late Dr Ashiq was a dedicated medical professional whose leadership at GMC Srinagar greatly advanced medical education standards and institutional development. His relentless commitment to nurturing future generations of healthcare professionals leaves behind an inspiring legacy," the minister said. "Dr Ashiq was known for his scholarly approach, compassionate mentorship and unwavering dedication to the medical fraternity. He has played a pivotal role in shaping the academic framework of GMC Srinagar, mentoring countless students and medical practitioners over decades."
Sakeena urged the medical fraternity and all associated institutions to continue striving towards the values and principles that Dr Ashiq stood for. She prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and strength for the family and colleagues to bear this irreparable loss.
