Heavy rain drenched the UP Tuesday. See where 7 inches fell

A high surf warning has been issued for the east facing beaches of the Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai.

One area in Michigan's Upper Peninsula saw more than 7 inches of rain Tuesday, Sept. 9, the National Weather Service said, and there were multiple reports of more than 4 inches.

According to precipitation reports from the NWS in Marquette, Amasa in the northwest UP, saw the most rain -- 7.33 inches. Other areas, including Crystal Falls and Channing, received more than 4 inches of rain.

"We had a swath of rainfall over 1 inch across the central portions of the UP yesterday," NWS meteorologist Nick Langlieb said in an email. "An area of heavy rainfall, in excess of 2 inches occurred from far eastern Gogebic, Iron, northern Dickinson and southern Marquette Counties."

The weather service had warned on Monday that some areas could see 3-5 inches of rain because storms that were set to move across the region could dump rain on the same areas and lead to flash flooding.

The eastern half of the UP saw little rain, with Sault Ste. Marie reporting only a trace on Tuesday.

The UP could see scattered showers Wednesday, Sept. 10, with highs ranging in the 60s, the weather service said. Cloudy skies are expected to clear on Thursday, Sept. 11.

"Less dreary weather returns headed into the tail end of the work week," the NWS in Marquette said.
