Myra Gibbs said her son Zion was inside their home on Danish Drive, playing Fortnite, when he was hit by a bullet from a drive-by shooter's gun. Zion was transported to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital, where he died days later from his injuries. His funeral was held June 19.
This is a special time of the year, with Christmas just around the corner.
Unfortunately, this will be the first Christmas that Myra Gibbs spends without her son, Zion Gibbs.
"My son Zion was very giving and loving. He had a big heart and compassion for other kids and people," Myra Gibbs said.
That's the memory of a grieving mother who lost her 7-year-old son to gun violence.
Zion was playing video games in his home in June when a stray bullet from a drive by shooting outside his home crashed through a window and shot him.
In honor of her son, Myra and Fayetteville Firefighters have organized a toy drive. Donations can be dropped off at Station #5.
"While Zion was at Children's Hospital fighting for his life, I saw other parents with their children in and out of the hospital," Myra said. "I could only imagine how heartbreaking it would be for children not to be home with their families."
Fayetteville police called Myra on Halloween to inform her of an arrest in the case.
19-year-old Sierra Chambers has been charged as an accessory after the fact. Myra is still waiting for the call that the person who fired the fatal shot is in custody.
"Yes, I am hoping to get that phone call as a Christmas gift," Myra said.
People can donate from November 28 to December 22 at 3543 Cumberland Road and will be open 24 hours a day.
