Police officer damaged ex-partner's front door in a jealous rage before fleeing

A former police officer who damaged an ex-partner's front door in a jealous rage would have been sacked if he had not quit the force.

As a result, he has been barred from working for any other force in the country following the domestic incident which led to colleagues being called, a misconduct hearing was told.

The ex-officer persistently messaged and called his former partner, threatened to come to her home address to confront a male, used insulting language towards her, refused to leave her address and banged on windows.

William Douglas, a former PC with Cleveland Police, was the subject of an accelerated misconduct hearing after he breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour, specifically the standards of discreditable conduct.

The hearing was told that on September 10, 2024, the former PC attended a local address, where he was involved in a domestic-related incident that led to the front door being damaged and the police being called.

Documents revealed that Mr Douglas fled the scene in his car after the victim called colleagues about his threatening behaviour.

The former officer told a colleague that he had "had a mare" and admitted that he had been at the property.

The ex-officer was subject to a final written warning at the time of the incident and related to violence and abusive behaviour towards a person who had been detained, the tribunal heard.

In a written ruling, Chief Constable Victoria Fuller said: "The former officer said that he wouldn't have hit a male in his former partner's house as he wouldn't have wanted to jeopardise his job.

"In my view, he must have realised that his actions were a grave breach of his professional obligations.

"In this case, there could have been no question of a final written warning, even were that open to me.

"The conduct is too serious and the only proper outcome would have been dismissal without notice."
