Wesley Chapel Man Blows .269, Takes Dying Passenger Home After Fatal Crash

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. - A 37-year-old man is facing felony charges after allegedly crashing into a tree while heavily intoxicated and leaving the scene with a critically injured passenger.

The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Bay Pines Drive. According to investigators, Robert Christopher Freeman was driving a Saturn SL1 southbound when he lost control north of Lindenhurst Drive.

The vehicle careened across the northbound lane and slammed into a tree on the shoulder.

Troopers say Freeman did not remain at the scene. Instead, he drove the damaged vehicle to his residence on Walker Drive with his passenger, a 38-year-old Wesley Chapel woman who had suffered serious injuries in the impact. Authorities eventually located both individuals at the home.

The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.

Freeman, who was uninjured, provided a breath sample of 0.269 -- more than three times the legal limit. He has been booked into the Pasco County Jail on charges of DUI Manslaughter and Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving a Death.
