Whether it's dreary or sunny outside, your skin always needs a dose of sunscreen. In addition to a consistent, effective skincare routine, SPF is the one product that packs the heaviest punch when keeping your skin protected and looking youthful. Luckily, it's simple to add adequate SPF while you're getting ready; just reach for a foundation with SPF. These foundations offer ample coverage and target multiple skin concerns while adding a layer of protection from harmful UV rays.

And even though the best foundations with SPF are packed with protection, Dr. Hannah Kopelman, a physician and rising dermatologist dual clinically trained in cutaneous oncology from Boston University and in hair loss from Columbia University, explains that she always reminds patients that a foundation with SPF alone typically doesn't provide enough sun protection for prolonged exposure. "I recommend applying a dedicated sunscreen underneath the foundation," she adds. "Consider the SPF in foundation as supplemental coverage rather than your primary defense. Also, keep in mind that sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours outdoors -- something that's not always practical with foundation alone."

Dr. Kopelman says she recommends her patients look for foundations with broad-spectrum SPF -- especially ones that protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. "I suggest using a foundation with at least SPF 30 to ensure adequate daily protection," she says. "Additionally, I prefer foundations containing mineral ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide because they're gentle, effective, and safe for sensitive skin types."

Ingredients also matter when seeking foundation containing mineral sunscreens such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These are effective, active ingredients that protect the skin against the sun. Dr. Kopelman suggests scouring for ones with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides that can enhance hydration, while antioxidants such as vitamin C or E help protect the skin against environmental damage.
