Cause of Anthony Joshua fatal crash revealed

Police in Nigeria have revealed the cause of the fatal crash that former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in.

The 36-year-old is in stable condition, but will remain in hospital over the New Year period following the crash, which took place on Monday.

Joshua's coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Latif 'Latz' Ayodele were pronounced dead at the scene after the Lexus jeep the group were travelling in crashed into a stationary truck shortly after 11am on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Makun.

Investigating police have now confirmed the horror accident was caused by a tyre blowout.

Police Commander Babatunde Akinbiyi of Nigeria's Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) detailed how preliminary investigations showed the car had been travelling when it 'experienced a tyre burst due to excessive speed.'

Mr Akinbiyi added that the car then 'lost control' as a result.

Boxing champion Joshua was sat in the backseat of the jeep, directly behind the driver who also survived the devastating crash.

His mother Yeta Odusanya has taken to his bedside, though it is reported he is 'stable' and will not require surgery for the injuries he has sustained.

The two-time world heavyweight champion had just defeated YouTuber Jake Paul in a boxing match earlier this month.

Taking to X following the shocking tragedy, Jake extended his sympathies to the former Olympian, writing: 'Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today's unfortunate accident.'

Well wishes also came from another old foe of Joshua's, Wladimir Klitschko, who was stopped in the 11th round by Joshua at Wembley Stadium in 2017.

'I'm deeply saddened to hear about AJ and his close-knit group of friends,' the former Ukrainian boxer wrote, 'Having had the pleasure of engaging in an unforgettable battle with AJ, I've always regarded him as a true class act who commands my utmost respect.

'My heart goes out to him, and I wish him and his loved ones all the best during this difficult time.'
