Thousands of travelers impacted by winter storms in the tri-state area

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The tri-state area is facing major travel headaches as thousands of passengers deal with flight delays and cancellations following the winter storm.

According to flight tracker Flight Aware, as of 8 p.m., there had been 323 delays and 108 cancellations at LaGuardia Airport. At JFK, there were 454 delays and 199 cancellations. Newark Liberty International Airport saw 425 delays and 112 cancellations.

Katharina Votl said her flight delay is throwing off her schedule.

"I was like lowkey afraid that the flight would get cancelled, but luckily the weather wasn't too bad," she said. "I'm a little sad that we're coming in so super late again because we're going to be very tired in the morning."

As airlines work to return flights to normal, a Delta Airlines representative said crews are restoring operations after the winter storm dumped snow and ice across regional airports.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey estimates that more than 5 million travelers will pass through its airports during the holiday season, which began December 22nd and continues through January 4th. Michele Astarita was among those travelers. She was excited to see the snow and took her flight delay in stride.

"Coming here, I kept checking and checking and checking, and I know we were going to have snow, so it -- overall it's exciting and expected, and I'm just glad the flight is going to go," Astarita said.

Christian Johnson said he's trying to make the best of a delayed trip.

"I did want to be in Miami a little bit earlier to spend some time with my dad, but it's like now I'm not making it there 'til 12 o'clock the next day," Johnson said. "So it's like -- just a little upset. I'm not really disappointed or anything. It is what it is."

Sunday is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season. Travelers are urged to check directly with their airline before heading to the airport.
