Six Injured As Farmers, Herders Clash In Jigawa Community - Daily Trust

Six people have reportedly sustained injuries following a violent clash between farmers and herders in Kangire village, Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Ishak Ibrahim Fanini, media aide to the Birnin Kudu Local Government Chairman, Muhammad Uba, confirmed the incident in a statement on his Facebook page.

According to the statement, the confrontation began after herders allegedly encroached on farmlands, resulting in the destruction of crops and sparking a violent altercation with farmers.

According to the statement, the Chairman, while presiding over a reconciliation meeting between the farmers and the herders of the affected community, stressed that the Local Government would not tolerate any form of conflict or actions capable of threatening peace.

The latest outbreak of violence in Birnin Kudu LGA comes weeks after a similar incident in October, in which three people were killed during separate clashes between farmers and herders in Birniwa Local Government Area of the State.

Farmer-herder conflicts in Jigawa State has recently escalated into a serious menace, creating tension across northern and central parts of Nigeria. Experts attribute the recurring confrontations to a mix of ecological pressures, socio-economic challenges, and historical grievances.

Climate change and advancing desertification in the far-northern Sahel is reported to have forced many pastoralists to migrate southward in search of pasture and water.

However, their movement into farming zones such as Jigawa often results in disputes over land and damages to crops, contributing to the recurring cycle of violence.
