Assam Congress marks Zubeen Garg's first birthday with emotional cultural tribute

Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on Tuesday organised a heartfelt cultural memorial titled "Kanchanjongha - Sanskriti Houk Moitreyor Mantra" to mark legendary singer Zubeen Garg's first birthday after his passing, turning the evening into a deeply emotional tribute filled with music, dance, art, and remembrance.

"His ideals continue to unite us and inspire us to work harder for the Assam he envisioned," a cultural coordinator remarked during the programme.

The event served as a special platform of homage as several well-known Assamese artists, along with cultural teams from various colleges, performed songs and choreographies inspired by Zubeen's life, values, and artistic journey. The hall remained packed with admirers who gathered to celebrate the irreplaceable star.

Organisers said the event not only honoured Zubeen's memory but also expressed a collective resolve to carry forward his dream of a progressive and culturally vibrant Assam.

Many attendees felt a silent but intense sense of loss throughout the day. Yet, they noted that Zubeen's legacy felt "more present than ever."

The performances, visual art displays, and heartfelt messages from fans created a shared emotional space where grief transformed into renewed determination.

The organisers expressed gratitude to the audience for their overwhelming presence. "Your participation has strengthened our commitment to realise the dream of a golden and united Assam," they said while concluding the programme.

In their concluding remarks, speakers at the event also reflected on Zubeen Garg's untimely death and the developments since then.

The legendary singer Zubeen Garg died on September 19, 2025, in Singapore while swimming, with the death certificate citing "drowning" as the cause.

In response to widespread public outcry, the Assam government ordered a second post-mortem at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, carried out in the presence of expert doctors, including specialists from AIIMS.

Assam CID formed a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case, and the team is continuing the investigation, having already filed more than 55 FIRs against the festival organisers and their manager on charges including criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Through this memorial, organisers emphasised that while grief still lingers, Zubeen's dream lives on, urging everyone to stay united and determined in building the Assam he believed in.
