Woman undergoing palliative care wants to see the Lake District again

A woman undergoing palliative care is raising funds for an all-terrain wheelchair so she can continue to enjoy the Lake District.

Annie Garforth, who is living with multiple complex health conditions, hopes to raise £18,000 for an exoquad mobility aid which would allow her to revisit some of her favourite places in the Lake District while she still can.

Annie said: "I have my DNR and now have done an emergency care health plan and made the decision to not go to hospital and just have treatment at home on a palliative care plan.

"My ability to walk has hugely decreased as have my energy levels and pain levels.

"The Lakes are so important to me because the happiest times of my life have been here."

Her current wheelchair restricts her to flat, urban areas, making it impossible to access the rugged landscapes she loves.

She has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the exoquad, an all-terrain mobility device.

A more affordable alternative, the Tramper, costs around £8,000.

Either option would require a trailer for transport.

Annie said: "I think the first place I would go would be Buttermere.

"I found a photo the other week of myself as a child with my dear uncle who sadly passed a few years ago and it would be lovely to go round there again remembering and making new memories with my family."

Annie has long been an advocate for protecting the Lake District.

She is the founder of The Binfluencers, a campaign group dedicated to tackling littering and fly camping in the Lakes.

Despite her declining health, Annie remains involved in the campaign with support from fellow volunteers.

She said: "I am trying to keep going with the campaign as long as I can.

"We now have a steering committee of myself, Julie Edmondson and Andy Cannon and they are fantastic and take a lot of the strain off me which I truly appreciate."

Annie's health conditions include cardiomyopathy, acute congestive heart failure, decompensated cardiac failure, left ventricular systolic dysfunction, mitral stenosis, peripheral vascular disease, secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

She said: "My biggest wish is to be able to get out and enjoy the lakes again while I still can but I also hope that through The Binfluencers campaigning and work we can spread enough awareness and education and work together with authorities to stop the place that means so much to me being destroyed by fly camping, littering and antisocial behaviours.

"I'm hopeful that authorities are now coming together to put a stop to these damaging behaviours and The Binfluencers will keep on campaigning until we succeed in our goal for a cleaner safer lakes and setting the trend for a cleaner Lakes one black bag at a time."

The exoquad or Tramper would open up the outdoors for Annie once again, allowing her to visit the natural spaces that shaped her life.
