The Mayor of Ennis says councillors can't make a "unilateral decision" to scrap proposed infrastructural changes in the county town without heeding the views of the public.
It comes as three local elected representatives have called for the removal of references to changes to the layout of a heavily-trafficked roundabout from the Draft Ennis Local Transport Plan.
Two months on from a decidedly heated meeting of Ennis Municipal District during which disgruntled members of the local business community swarmed the gallery to make their feelings known, concerns about the Draft Ennis Local Transport Plan haven't gone away.
A motion tabled by Fianna Fáil councillors Tom O'Callaghan and Pat Daly, and Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle this week has requested that references to altering the Gort Road Highfield Park junction in Ennis be removed from the document.
The proposal in question is a reconfiguration of the roundabout into a three-arm signalised junction with the removal of access to the McDonald's arm.
The document states that access would instead be via the entrance to Centra on the Gort Road.
Public consultation on the plan closed on July 11th, and Mayor of Ennis, Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard, says the outcome of this must be respected.
Responding to the motion, Ennis MD Senior Engineer Seán Lenihan says the plan is still going through the "various stages of its development".
These, he says, include the compilation and assessment of submissions received during the recent public consultation phase, review by internal council staff as well as further workshops and briefings.
It's also been claimed the sentiment of the motion is "almost identical" to a submission received during public consultation.
However, Mr Lenihan has suggested that if members agree, the motion can be considered as part of the "overall package" of the public consultation.
Councillor O'Callaghan claims he had to "fight" to get the motion on the agenda and says the town will be "backwards" unless contentious matters like this can be debated openly.
