BJP-led NDA's nominee CP Radhakrishnan was up against Congress-led INDIA bloc's B Sudershan Reddy in a direct contest billed as an "ideological battle".
The numbers favour Radhakrishnan and his victory is certain. On paper, the BJP-led NDA has 435 MPs eligible to cast their votes. The ruling alliance is also hoping to gain votes of some of the fence sitters.
In contrast, the Opposition INDIA bloc has a combined strength of 324 MPs. Despite not having enough numbers, the INDIA bloc put up a spirited fight.
The Opposition alliance made it an ideological battle between Radhakrishnan, an RSS leader and Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge.
