At the outset of the 2024 college football season, the thought was that Michigan cornerback Will Johnson was the top of the NFL draft board for just about any team in the market. However, there have been some potential setbacks.
As Travis Hunter continues to gain steam, Johnson is still seen as a top-10 pick, but his luster has worn off a bit. In large part, it's due to his injury issues he's faced as of late. The elite cornerback played his last home game in Week 4 against USC and his last regular season college football game just three games later at Illinois -- exiting that game at halftime due to an undisclosed injury.
Johnson didn't partake in Michigan's wins over Ohio State or in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama. He also didn't participate in last month's NFL scouting combine. Now, per a report, Johnson will not be participating in Michigan's March 21 pro day, either, due to a nagging hamstring injury. He is expected to work out for teams in a workout on April 14 -- just weeks before the draft -- once he recovers.
Despite not having been healthy, Johnson is drawing rave reviews from NFL general managers due to his style of play -- particularly from what was seen in his sophomore campaign. Even in 2024, with his limited play, Johnson managed to have two interceptions -- one in the season opener against Fresno State and another against USC. He is the all-time school leader in pick-sixes.
