SCOTLAND, Conn. (WTNH) -- A tiny town in Windham County has a population of just under 1,600 but it has six ZIP codes.
You can imagine the confusion that causes.
"I lived here for twenty years and it's been a mess since day one," said Aubra Bartholomew, who owns the Pins to Needles Alteration shop.
The business has the Scotland ZIP code of 06264, but her house, which is also in Scotland about a mile away, has a different ZIP code.
"Sometimes, they can't even find my house, because it's a Baltic address in Scotland," Bartholomew said.
Other residents said that they've been told their addresses don't exist.
"If I have it delivered to my home, I have to put Hampton in the address," Scotland resident Cindy Morrissette said.
Another woman told News 8 that she doesn't bother putting up a mailbox, and has had packages shipped overseas.
To try to avoid confusion, some residents get post office boxes. That way, their mail and their packages get delivered there.
The confusion goes beyond mail and package deliveries. It also affects paying taxes, renewing licenses and voting.
Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.) and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) introduced companion bills in the U.S. House and Senate to make 06264 the single ZIP code for all 600 residences in Scotland.
That bill was unanimously passed by the House on Wednesday.
"It's exciting, it's really exciting," Bartholomew said. "Oh, finally we can get all this mess straightened out."
It still needs Senate and presidential approval.
"I am hoping that this clears it up, and I'm hoping it doesn't take too long," Morrissette said.
Courtney said the Senate could vote on the bill in the next few days. If it gets that approval, then it will head to the president's desk for his signature.
"It gives a 270-day window for the post office to actually implement what the legislation calls for," Courtney said.
