ISLAMABAD - A member of Pakistan's national hockey team has expressed disappointment over the unavailability of head coach Tahir Zaman just days before the team's crucial series, terming the situation demoralising for the players.
The sources said that the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and Tahir Zaman should have resolved their differences amicably. They said that the uncertainty surrounding the coach's status until hours before the team's departure had a negative impact on the squad's morale.
Sources further revealed that the team benefited significantly from Tahir Zaman's coaching, but he should have shown flexibility in dealing with players. "Instead of demanding the exclusion of players who reported late to the training camp, he could have imposed a fine," the sources added.
Players reportedly stated that personal differences should have been set aside for the sake of the country, especially ahead of an important international series. The head coach had reportedly sought disciplinary action against two players who reported late to the camp.
However, PHF officials intervened and advised against dropping the two players so close to the series. Instead, the federation decided that all players who reported late would face fines.
As disagreements between PHF officials and Tahir Zaman escalated, the head coach stepped down from his position. Muhammad Usman has since been appointed as head coach for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh.
Sources also disclosed that Tahir Zaman would not be available for the team's subsequent tour of Spain. The PHF, meanwhile, has hinted at hiring a foreign coach for the upcoming FIH Pro Hockey League.
It may be mentioned here that Pakistan and Bangladesh woud play their first match of the bilateral series on November 13 in Dhaka. The winner of the series would qualify for the World Cup qualifiers.
