Broken roads, clogged drains & poor waste collection choke Tajpur Road in Ludhiana. | Ludhiana News - The Times of India

Ludhiana: Poor condition of the road leading to the main garbage dump at Tajpur Road is not only affecting the garbage collection from the city, but also creating blockages in the sewer system of many areas of Ludhiana's east constituency. Manhole cover of a main sewer line was damaged during waste collection, and it became clogged with heaps of garbage. Consequently, the sewer line became blocked.Questions are being raised about fresh waste processing as well, for which the MC had hired a private contractor a few months ago because composting of wet waste has not started till date. Mayor Inderjit Kaur also conducted a meeting over this issue with officials on Saturday at the camp office and asked them to resolve this issue at the earliest as garbage collection has become a herculean task.During the rainy season, garbage collection remained a major issue in the areas because the Tajpur Road was in poor shape. The officials claimed that while garbage is dumped at the site, some waste collectors just throw it on the road where the problem starts. Now, as the sewer line has been blocked in the mayor's ward dirty water is flowing on the streets. At the moment, the officials are repairing the sewer manhole to address the blockage.Meanwhile, one of the officials claimed that tenders were issued for the processing of legacy as well as fresh waste, but the work had not started. In the next few days, there is a chance that the legacy waste bioremediation process will start because the civic body has received permission for an electricity connection. For the processing of fresh waste, the MC has allocated three acres to a private firm where it will start composting. He shared that on Monday one more meeting was scheduled over this issue. However, when asked about the ongoing repair work, chief engineer Ravinder Garg said once the repair work was completed, the sewer issue would be resolved.
