Bitwise co-founders sentenced to combined 20 years in prison

Fresno-based company Bitwise Industries bought and renovated this three-story office and workforce training space at 18th and H streets in downtown Bakersfield.

The disgraced co-founders behind Fresno-based Bitwise Industries, the now-defunct startup whose collapse last year after a glitzy expansion into Bakersfield cost investors an estimated $115 million, were sentenced in federal court Tuesday to a combined 20 years in prison.

Jake Soberal, the 38-year-old former intellectual property lawyer who served as co-CEO, received a sentence of 11 years. His accomplice, 44-year-old computer engineer Irma Olguin Jr., was sentenced to nine years. Both had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to commit wire fraud and a separate count of actual wire fraud.
