New solar-powered duck feed station installed at Yate park

It was put in place by Yate Town Council and Friends of Kingsgate Park, with the help of The Feed Ducks Initiative.

The Feed Ducks Initiative works with councils and community groups throughout the UK to encourage sustainable duck feeding.

Their innovative dispensers, powered by solar energy, provide healthy, floating duck feed for £1 per use.

This initiative aims to protect wildlife, improve water quality, and cut down on litter and overfeeding.

Feeding ducks is a popular activity for many families, but giving them bread can cause 'serious harm' to them and their environment, according to The Feed Ducks Initiative.

Bread does not provide the necessary nutrients for ducks, it contributes to pollution, and leads to overfeeding.

The new duck feed station offers an environmentally friendly way to feed ducks, ensuring they receive the right nutrition, while keeping the lake at Kingsgate Park clean and healthy.

The Feed Ducks Initiative provides a free-to-install and fully maintained system, at no cost to the council or community group.

The station is made from recycled materials and reduces bread feeding, litter and vermin in duck feeding areas.

Ten per cent of the proceeds are donated back to community groups and park improvement projects.

Councillor Alan Monaghan, deputy mayor of Yate, said: "The Feed Ducks Initiative and installation of the duck feeder at Kingsgate Park is a big step forward to achieving the aim of ensuring that a supply of feed for the ducks is always available and is situated at the point of consumption.

"The feed dispenser will reduce waste and the risk of discarded and spilt feed attracting rodents to the viewing area.

"Yate Town Council and the Friends of Kingsgate Park are delighted to welcome this new facility to the park, which will also provide the donation of 10 per cent of the feed charge back to the Friends group to support further enhancements at the park, and a free digital education program."

The duck feed station is ready for use next to the lake at Kingsgate Park.
