Jon M. Chu Says Britney Spears Will Be 'Very Involved' in Biopic

Chu told Entertainment Tonight that the mega-star will definitely be part of the production for his upcoming Universal film, which is based on Spears' life. "La La Land" and Broadway producer Marc Platt is also producing the big-screen adaptation.

"She's going to be very involved," Chu said of Spears. "I haven't really started anything fully yet. But she will be very involved in this. I have ideas and things of an approach, but it's very, very early."

However, there has not been anyone cast yet as singer Spears.

"I've seen all the fan casting, I've seen all that stuff, and I always take those into consideration because maybe there's a good idea out there," Chu said. "But we'll have to see. We'll have to see what the approach for the movie is before we know who's right for it. But I'm open for anything, really."

In November 2022, Millie Bobby Brown voiced her desire to bring Spears' life story to the screen. At the time, Spears was not interested in a biopic, posting to Instagram, "I hear about people wanting to do movies about my life...dude I'm not dead !!!"

The audiobook version of Spears' memoir was narrated by Oscar winner Michelle Williams.

Prior to the announcement of the Universal film with Chu directing, Page Six reported that Margot Robbie's LuckyChap was interested in adapting Spears' book, as were Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine and Brad Pitt's Plan B production banners. Robbie said it was "not true" at the time and shut down rumors that she would be portraying Spears.

"Wicked" filmmaker Chu previously directed "In the Heights" and "Crazy Rich Asians," as well as the Justin Bieber concert film "Never Say Never."

"Mickey Mouse Club" alum Spears made her feature film debut in "Crossroads." Her acting career did not continue. The "Toxic" Grammy winner detailed her audition for "The Notebook" in "The Woman in Me" and wrote that she was "glad" she didn't land the lead part. She also revealed she was offered a villain role in Oscar-winning film "Chicago."
