Instagram head believes the right approach is needed for AI-generated content

In the age of artificial intelligence chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, Character.ai, Perplexity.ai, and more, it's hard to identify what is real. That's why, many people including some of the CEOs of the biggest tech companies have raised concerns about using these products. Notably, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has also raised concerns about AI-generated content on social media platforms.

Mosseri raised concerns about the content posted on social media platforms using artificial intelligence. In a series of posts on Threads, the Instagram head said that social platforms need to provide more context to users to identify AI-generated content. Mosseri suggests that who posted something matters more in the AI age. The company should advise their app users not to blindly trust the images they see on their platform. Mosseri added that users may mistake the content shared using AI products for reality.

"Our role as internet platforms is to label content generated as AI as best we can. But, some content will inevitably slip through the cracks, and not all misrepresentations will be generated with AI. So we must also provide context about who is sharing so you can assess for yourself how much you want to trust their content", said Mosseri in the Threads post.

Notably, the Instagram executive didn't specify the social media networking companies in his posts on Threads. However, Mosseri's vision seems to be in line with user-lead moderation systems like Community Notes on Elon Musk's X. It is also similar to other custom moderation filters found on other social networking platforms like YouTube or Bluesky.

Notably, the Instagram head posted about the AI content soon after Madonna shared edited photos hugging the Pope. The pop star shared AI-generated photos on the social networking platform depicting the Pope embracing her. The images sparked outrage online as many of her followers reacted with shock and humor. It is a clear indication that people should know which photos are real. They should be able to distinguish between AI-generated and real images with a marker.
