27th December 2025 - (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory has reported that a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck northwest of the Ryukyu Islands at 11.07pm on Saturday, 27th December 2025.
According to the Observatory's initial analysis, the epicentre was located near 32.67°N, 126.50°E, approximately 92 kilometres south of Jeju and about 1,670 kilometres northeast of Hong Kong. The quake originated at a considerable depth, with a focal depth of around 570 kilometres.
The Observatory said it received more than ten reports from members of the public in Hong Kong who felt the earth tremor. The shaking reportedly lasted for a few seconds.
Based on preliminary assessment, the tremor in Hong Kong reached intensity II (2) on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. At this level, the movement is typically felt only by people at rest, those on upper floors or individuals in especially quiet or favourable conditions. No damage is expected at this intensity.
