Mozambique pulled off one of the biggest upsets in AFCON history as they outclassed a star-studded Gabon to secure their first-ever victory in the tournament.
Mozambique celebrated a landmark achievement as Chiquinho Conde guided his team to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals victory, overcoming Gabon 3-2 in a dramatic Group F clash at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir.
After a cagey opening half-hour, the match burst into life just before the break. Mozambique seized the lead from a cleverly executed set-piece, with Geny Catamo delivering a precise cross for Faisal Bangal to head in from close range. The Mambas quickly doubled their lead when Gabon's Bruno Ecuele Manga fouled Domingues in the penalty area. Catamo confidently stepped up and converted the resulting spot-kick.
Mozambique nearly extended their lead to three when Witi's powerful shot struck the crossbar. However, their two-goal cushion was short-lived. With the final kick of the half, Gabon's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang found the net to cut the deficit to 2-1, setting the stage for a tense second period.
The high tempo continued after the restart, and Mozambique swiftly restored their two-goal advantage. In a swift counter-attack, Witi found right-back Diogo Calila, who had made a surging run into the box. Calila directed a downward header past goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba to make it 3-1.
With history in their sights, Mozambique faced a nervy final 14 minutes after Alex Moucketou-Moussounda scored for Gabon. Goalkeeper Hernani Siluane made a spectacular initial save, but the rebound fell kindly to Moucketou-Moussounda, who slotted the ball home to ensure a grandstand finish.
Despite mounting pressure in the closing stages, the Mambas held on to claim a famous victory in their 16th AFCON tournament match. The win significantly boosts their chances of advancing, while Gabon remains at the bottom of Group F after losing their opening two fixtures.
