Delhi govt seeks daily report on medicine stock at hospitals

The Indian Express reported on shortage of medicines at Lok Nayak Hospital on December 19

Delhi Health Minister Dr Pankaj Singh on Saturday said all government hospitals have been directed to submit daily reports on their available stocks of medicine as well as weekly compliance reports to ensure they are prepared in case of a surge in cases of respiratory illnesses.

The statement comes after The Indian Express, on December 19, highlighted shortage of drugs to treat respiratory illnesses at Lok Nayak Hospital - the Delhi government's largest healthcare facility. The report said the hospital is facing a shortfall of essential respiratory medicines and supplies, including nebuliser solutions, cough syrups, multivitamins and several inhalers, forcing many patients to purchase expensive drugs from private pharmacies.

Speaking to mediapersons, Singh said, "Strict advisories have been issued to hospitals to follow standard treatment protocols for respiratory diseases and to ensure proper care for patients suffering from pollution-triggered conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and other breathing disorders."

"Hospitals have also been instructed to keep essential equipment and medicines ready, including bronchodilators, inhalers and nebulisers," he added.

Asked about the shortage of medicines, Singh said, "Adequate (number of) medicines have already been procured through the Central Procurement Agency." He asserted that "there is no shortage of drugs or facilities for patients seeking treatment due to poor air quality".

"The government has ensured hospitals are fully equipped to handle an increased patient load during the pollution season... Continuous monitoring through reporting mechanisms will help quickly address any gaps and maintain system-wide readiness," Singh said.
