HANNIBAL (WGEM) - Childhood obesity is impacting millions of children across the U.S.
The CDC reports one in five children and adolescents in the U.S. have obesity. That's around 14.7 million youths.
Kristin Bradshaw, family nurse practitioner at Blessing Health Hannibal, said over the past 20 years the number of children dealing with obesity has doubled.
A variety of factors have contributed to this increase, which she said includes genetics, certain foods and lifestyle choices. If obesity isn't treated, she said children will likely deal with other health issues later in life including Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver and cancer.
However, she said help is available.
"Definitely want to encourage patients and people who struggle with obesity to not be afraid to look for help and that they're not alone," Bradshaw said. "I mean, so many of us struggle with our weight and obesity and it's definitely not their fault."
Bradshaw also said children dealing with obesity are more likely to deal with mental heath issues in adulthood.
To help your child, Bradshaw said medication is available but there are also other options. She said she recommends children get at least one hour of physical activity each day, avoid eating fast or processed foods and have home-cooked meals whenever possible.
With busy lives, however, Bradshaw said it can be difficult for families to make those home-cooked meals.
"I have four kids, so I know it is very busy, especially when both parents are working and you get home and struggle to get something going for dinner, but remembering that you are preparing these kids for a healthy future where they can live as long and as healthy as possible," Bradshaw said.
For parents who are worried about not having enough time to make a home-cooked meal, Bradshaw suggested meal planning and prepping ahead of time. She also said she recommends keeping lots of fresh foods, like fruits, available for kids to snack on.
Bradshaw said limiting their sugary drink intake, making sure they get enough sleep and limiting their screen time can also help them stay healthy.
When it comes to physical activity, Bradshaw said to try to make it a family activity and something the kids will enjoy.
Bradshaw also said parents should try to be a role model for their kids. If parents are asking their kids to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, she said parents should be eating the same thing.
