Maharashtra to Link CCTV Cameras with AI for Faster Crime Detection

With the integration of AI technology, police will be able to trace a suspect's movements, track vehicles

The Maharashtra government is expanding CCTV coverage from urban to rural areas and taking it a step further by connecting these cameras to artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

According to officials from the state's Home Department, these AI-enabled CCTV cameras will help police quickly access crucial data such as information about criminals and vehicles used in crimes. Additionally, the state plans to make CCTV installation mandatory for private establishments, including shops and offices. A policy is currently being developed to enforce this requirement.

CCTV footage helps police identify suspects, weapons used, and vehicles involved in crimes. With the integration of AI technology, police will be able to trace a suspect's movements, track vehicles, and gather data within minutes making it easier to collect solid evidence and arrest criminals swiftly.

To strengthen law and order in Mumbai and across the state, the government is implementing multiple safety measures. However, issues such as camera maintenance and management remain challenges. Officials are studying how to assign maintenance responsibility to a single authority and are working on a detailed policy.

A meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will be held soon to finalise the policy.

Currently, CCTV cameras have been installed across 1,200 police stations in Maharashtra, and new installations are underway. Once connected with AI technology, these cameras will significantly enhance the depth and speed of criminal investigations, especially in crowded areas, religious places, and tourist spots.
