Netflix fans have days to watch 'spellbinding' Irish drama based on bestseller - Irish Mirror

A 'spellbinding' Irish period drama based on a best-selling novel is set to leave Netflix this month.

The Secret Scripture first landed in cinemas in 2017 and left critics and casual moviegoers divided. Netflix subscribers have until Sunday, November 23 to tune in and form their own opinions.

Adapted from Sebastian Barry's 2008 book of the same name, the story follows older woman Rose McNulty, who has been a patient at a psychiatric hospital for 50 years.

Rose was banished to the facility after being accused of murdering her baby in the height of World War II.

But when the hospital is set to be demolished, Rose is re-evaluated to determine whether she should walk free or be transferred.

The evaluation allows Rose to tell her own story through notes she has written in her bible.

At its core, the drama explores themes of religion, trauma and sexuality.

Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave takes on the leading role, with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo actress Rooney Mara portraying young Rose.

The stacked cast doesn't end there, with Untamed star Eric Bana playing Rose's psychiatrist.

Meanwhile, Theo James and Jack Reynor portray the main character's love interests.

Behind the scenes, six-time Oscar nominee Jim Sheridan served as the film's director and co-writer.

With all of this star power and an already-beloved story, The Secret Scripture was expected to be a hit.

However, it failed to impress critics, earning a sour 34% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Film fans, on the other hand, were spellbound by the adaptation and awarded it an impressive 69%.

One viewer raved: "We stumbled upon this movie by accident one evening. By the time it finished, we all had tears streaming down our faces. Fantastic acting, we were spellbound [....].

"Highly recommended, a must see film. PS, make sure you have a box of tissues to hand."

Someone else echoed the praise on IMDb, penning: "I don't understand why this film isn't more highly rated. Very good performances, fantastic story and beautifully filmed.

"It's the best performance I have ever seen from Redgrave and Bana delivers a nicely understated supporting performance."

While a third review reads: "This is one of those rare films that engages and tests your emotions.

"Superbly directed and flawlessly acted by one and all, this film will provoke a myriad of emotions from anger, sadness and outrage to tenderness, warmth and love and I hope for many, tears at it's conclusion."
