FARGO - A local infectious disease expert is encouraging residents to check their vaccination records following Minnesota's first confirmed measles case of the year.
The Minnesota Department of Health reported the positive case several days ago, prompting renewed awareness about the virus and its symptoms. Common signs of measles include a sore throat, red eyes, fever and a rash.
Sanford Health infectious disease specialist Dr. Avish Nagpal said vaccination remains the strongest line of defense against the illness.
"It's what we are, what we have experienced with previous outbreaks -- 95% of people who are infected have not gotten vaccinated, or their vaccination status is unknown," Nagpal said.
Most people can review their immunization records online or through their health care provider. Local clinics and hospitals are also offering measles vaccinations for those who need them.
