Special Agent Bernard Randolf suffered from PTSD. He would smoke to calm down. Or at least he used to do until he had a new baby at home. His new baby had colic.
Randy didn't want to make it worse by bringing in cigarette smoke and so he was going without cigarettes. He had nothing else to calm him down. He was going around by pretending to be cheerful and he knew it wasn't going to last. He was going to snap. One way or another. It probably didn't help that they caught a murder case. NCIS was informed that Father John Larkin had been murdered at his church.
The father was a Navy Chaplin. NCIS had to investigate his case like any other soldier. They learned that the father was giving confessional when he was killed and that there was a missing priest.
The other priest was Father Bobby. Father Bobby was hiding in the private office saying his "hail Mary" over and over again. The man also had blood on him. He seemed pretty shaken and NCIS had to question him in case he saw something or was their culprit. They took Father Bobby back to their office.
The father calmed down when he away from the crime scene. He apologized for his earlier behavior. He said he was shaken when he saw Father John in such a condition.
He was also freaking out because he was worried that the killer might have made a mistake. It was Father Bobby's turn to be in the box this week. He traded with Father John. The other priest was also shot first in the confessional. He tried crawling away when he got shot the second time and it was the second bullet that killed him.
Meaning the killer never got a good look at Father John's face. They could have thought they were aiming at Father Bobby. Which of course worried Father Bobby. NCIS had to give him protection detail.
Randy signed up for it. He's been signing up for these kinds of jobs for the past few weeks. Mary Jo suspected he didn't want to go home. Franks thought that Randy wanted to be away from a baby with colic. He assigned Gibbs to go with Randy in case Randy fell asleep on the job. And assigning Gibbs might have been a mistake.
