Letters: Trump, media

Letters: Trump, media

The media has had a hand in installing the most unqualified man to the presidency. This slovenly, flagitious imbecile was treated like the things he did and said were normal. In the name of being fair, the media made sure to report everything he did and said without comment. Their journalistic integrity dictated that they must be impartial and balanced. The media is responsible for reporting the news but has other responsibilities. Responsibilities include informing and educating, being an informal arm of the Republic, while talking truth to power.

For the last four years, the media, including this paper, have continually treated Trump's words as normal and in the name of fairness in reporting both sides of the story, thus giving them credibility. It is as if the "Final Solution" should have been treated with impartiality. Like finding it important to get Pol Pot's side of the killing fields and treating it like it was normal. The legitimate media tries so hard to look unbiased that they mistake the truth for bias.

Talking truth to power is something this paper has ignored; it has acquiesced to bottom line economic pressures. When this paper emphasizes impartiality because of economics, it doesn't fulfill its obligation to the truth to power or its role needed in a free and open society.

Talking truth to power requires courage and independence, both of which are scarce here. There are times when upsetting portions of your readership are needed. This paper does not publish its own editorials. It rides the fence, getting along to get along! A commitment to the truth would affect the bottom line. I knew who to vote for; I wanted to know if this paper did.
