Kate Gallego reelected as Phoenix mayor, defeats Matt Evans

PHOENIX (AZFamily) -- Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego has been reelected, beating Republican opponent Matt Evans in the 2024 election.

Minutes after the results from the first batch of ballots were counted, her campaign claimed victory.

"Over the last five years, we've created jobs that lift families, invested in our long-term water supply and made our city even safer," Gallego said in a written statement. "I'm incredibly grateful that Phoenix voters have elected me to serve a final term as mayor, and I look forward to continuing to build a future that works for everyone."

This will be her third term. She will be sworn into her final four-year term in April and serve through spring 2029.

She is the second woman to be elected mayor in Phoenix's history and one of the youngest big city mayors in the nation.

Before being elected in 2019, Gallego served on the Phoenix City Council from 2014-2018.

During her time as mayor, Gallego brought a $65 billion semiconductor manufacturing plant to the Valley that will create thousands of new jobs. She also established the Office of Heat Response and Mitigation, launched a cool pavement pilot and helped Phoenix become the most sustainable desert city in the nation.

Gallego improved parks, public safety and city infrastructure and is working with Arizona State University to build a new medical school in downtown Phoenix.

She graduated from Harvard and has an MBA from the Wharton School of Business in Pennsylvania.
