Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration a milestone in countering 'Taiwan independence,' promoting reunification

(ECNS) -- The Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration marks a key milestone in efforts to counter "Taiwan independence" and advance national reunification, guests from both sides of the Taiwan Strait said Sunday at a commemoration event hosted by the All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots (ACFTC) in Beijing.

The event followed a decision by China's national legislature to designate Oct. 25 as the commemoration day. The decision, adopted on Friday by the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress, stipulates that the state will hold commemorative activities in various forms on this day.

Wu Rongyuan, chairman of Taiwan's Labour Party, said this commemoration day is a powerful counterattack against the absurd remarks of "de-sinicization" and the fallacy that "Taiwan's status is undetermined," which is fabricated by "Taiwan independence" separatists in the region to cater to external interference.

The restoration of Taiwan is irrefutable evidence of the Chinese government's restoration of sovereignty over Taiwan and an important part in the historical facts and legal record proving that Taiwan is part of China, said Ji Bin, vice chairman of the ACFTC.

No matter how the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its politicians distort the truth about the history of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, deny the achievements of the victory in the War of Resistance, downplay or refute the historical significance of Taiwan's restoration, or even collude with external forces to clamor for the fallacy that "Taiwan's status is undetermined," they cannot alter the historical and legal fact that Taiwan belongs to China, Ji said.

Wang Shushen, deputy head of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Taiwan Studies, pointed out that both the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation have confirmed China's sovereignty over Taiwan.

China proclaimed to the international community that it firmly opposes any separatist activities by establishing the commemoration day and holding large-scale commemorative activities, Wang said.

The Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration helps strengthen the shared historical memory among compatriots on both sides of the Strait, said Chu Jingtao, a researcher at the Institute of Modern History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

It reinforces the recognition among all Chinese people that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, further promotes the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, and ultimately advances China's complete reunification, Chu added.

"Taiwan's restoration should not only be written into law, but also into people's minds," said lawyer Cai Shiming who works for the Gaopeng (Shanghai) Law Firm.

For young people in Taiwan, the commemoration day will help them recognize the shared cultural and ethnic bonds across the Strait, Cai added.
