LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A Montgomery County mother is raising concerns over the school district's leadership.
Sammi Jo Brock says her special needs son was dropped off six miles from their home. This is after she says her son told the bus driver it wasn't his stop.
Sammi Jo Brock is recalling the ordeal that she says has brought a lot of grief to her family.
"Nobody wants to be held accountable. Nobody really wants to take responsibility for it - And they will be held accountable and they will be held responsible for this," said Brock.
On Monday, Brock says she received a phone call from Montgomery County Schools. Brock says the caller told her her son would be home shortly after his bus driver passed his stop. Instead, she says the bus driver dropped off her son six miles away from their home along a bus road on 599.
She adds she found out not through the school but from a best friend.
"I figured she was calling me to talk to me about horses because that's typically what we do. To my surprise she was basically in tears and I could hear my son in the background crying. She was very torn up. He was very torn up," said Brock.
After the incident occurred, Brock says she called Montgomery County Schools to get answers.
WKYT reached out to Montgomery County Schools to ask about the incident.
Superintendent Matt Thompson sent WKYT the following statement:
Student and staff safety is our first priority. Yesterday we had an isolated incident where a student was dropped off at the address we have on file for the family. A former neighbor and family friend watched the child until he was picked up by his mother. The child is safe. The principal, district administrators, and transportation have been in communication with the family to ensure addresses and bus information is up to date and correct and to create a plan to ensure this does not happen again. Any time we have a situation like this we use it as an opportunity to strengthen our procedures and communications with families.
Brock disputes Thompson's account.
She says they've used the same address for the last year and a half for her son's drop off.
"I don't care if I call everyday to make sure gets where he needs to go. I don't care if its me calling the school every single to make sure he got on the right bus," said Brock.
Brock says she is currently considering legal action against the school district.
