Investigation continues in Newbury Park officer-involved shooting

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office and Ventura County district attorney's office continue to investigate an officer-involved shooting last month at Ventu Park Shopping Center in Newbury Park that left a man in critical condition.

The man -- a 50-year-old Thousand Oaks resident, according to authorities -- has not yet been publicly identified.

Just before 6:30 a.m. Oct. 24, the sheriff's office received multiple reports regarding a domestic dispute, vehicle fire and man with a knife near the Ralphs at 583 Ventu Park Road, officers said.

When deputies arrived at the shopping center, they attempted to detain the suspect, who was holding a machete, according to a news release.

The man did not comply with the deputies. Although one of the officers used a stun gun on him, the suspect ran away and led them on a foot pursuit into one of the businesses, officers said.

When the suspect -- still holding the machete -- approached employees in a threatening manner, one of the deputies shot him with a gun, the release states.

Deputies rendered aid until paramedics arrived and the man was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center for treatment. As of Oct. 25, he was still in critical condition, according to the sheriff's office.

The officers were not injured during the incident, and their body-worn camera footage will be released 45 days after the shooting in accordance with state law, according to the release.

The deputy who shot the suspect was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, the document states.

Investigators later learned that before deputies arrived at the shopping center, the suspect had used his machete to break a window at the Palm Garden Hotel at 495 Ventu Park Road, according to the sheriff's office.

The suspect then walked to the 76 Gas Station at 575 Ventu Park Road, where he used the machete to assault a man and carjack his vehicle, according to authorities.

The victim sustained a minor injury.

After carjacking the vehicle, the suspect walked away from the car and into the shopping center's parking lot.

He used the machete to vandalize another man's car, officers said.

The man who was inside the car was unharmed.

The sheriff's office asks anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Sgt. Francisco

Jauregui at (805) 384- 4737.

The incident is the second officer involved shooting in Thousand Oaks this year.

On June 30, a deputy shot Adan Perez Hernandez, who had been armed with a knife and what appeared to be a bow and arrow, in the 200 block of Avenida de los Arboles, according to the sheriff's office.

The 38-year-old man was treated for gunshot wounds at Los Robles and is now in custody at Todd Road Jail on $50,000 bail after pleading not guilty to brandishing a deadly weapon at an officer and resisting an executive officer, records indicate.
