Lutz Pfannenstiel, St. Louis City SC's initial sporting director, who built the team from scratch and was fired on Aug. 25, with the team on its way to missing the playoffs for the second year in a row, posted a farewell note on Instagram to fans and the city on Wednesday.
It reads:
"St. Louis City SC fans, the time for me has come to say goodbye to this incredible project, this wonderful city, and without doubt, the best fans in MLS.
"I want to thank ownership for trusting me to lead their first-ever sporting project. From setting out blueprints in our temporary Clayton office, to signing our first academy players, to stepping out in Austin as underdogs, to that first match at Energizer Park, and on to a record-breaking season, it has been the honor of a lifetime.
"City fans, your love for this club is unconditional. Your support for the boys has been unrelenting. The noise from the North End was just as loud in the bad times as it was in the good. This place is the gold standard for American support, and I believe the foundations we've put in place will play a part in the glorious future you deserve.

"I will truly miss this City.
"Thank you, St. Louis.
"Let's go @stlcitysc"
