Michael Bay & Sydney Sweeney's Video Game Movie Finally Gets an Update (Exclusive)

Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried teamed up to bring Freida McFadden's hit book The Housemaid to the big screen, but that's not the only intriguing adaptation Sydney is a part of. One of the more surprising team-ups on the horizon is a video game project that involves Transformers and Bad Boys director Michael Bay and Housemaid and Euphoria star Sweeney, and after months of silence, the film has finally received an update.

ComicBook had the chance to speak to Anaconda Producer Brad Fuller about the delightful new comedy adaptation, and during the discussion, he also provided an update on Bay and Sweeney's Outrun movie, which was announced earlier this year. The good news is the project is moving forward, and is actually right up Bay and Sweeney's alley.

"We are in early stages. Right before you called, I was saying to Bay, 'I have to get off the phone. I need to do this thing.' Outrun is based on a Sega video game. It was a driving game in the 80s. Bay has always wanted to do a driving movie," Fuller said. "I am very invested in Sydney Sweeney. She has been supportive of our company for a long time. I felt since Sydney has brought us two things that I would like to return the favor. Outrun is perfect for her. Sydney actually works on her own cars. That's not fake. She is a gearhead. I put Michael with Sydney at Universal and I think they are starting to figure out the script right now."

Out of all of the video games that you can build a film with, why would Bay and Sweeney choose Outrun? If you're not familiar with the franchise, the game was released by Sega in 1986 and is actually inspired by designer You Suzuki's love of The Cannonball Run. Suzuki wanted to create more of a driving game as opposed to a racing game, which is part of what led to Outrun's immense success.

The game has players driving a Ferrari Testarossa and navigating traffic and other hurdles as they make their way through to the next location. You then have branching paths to choose from, and as you make your way through the various stages, you will get one of several unique endings. At its base, this is a game that acts as an easy sandbox in which to build a story, with the main elements being a red sports car, a big city, and lots of vehicular chaos.

Now, the game that was inspired by the love of a movie is now inspiring a movie itself, and you can see why Bay and Sweeney would be interested. Fuller mentions that Bay has always wanted to do a driving movie, and this is literally the perfect property to adapt in that respect. Then there's Sweeney, who Fuller mentions works on her own cars in between projects. With their natural interest in the concept and the blank slate the property mostly provides, this could be a perfect pairing.
