South African football legend Mlungisi "Professor" Ngubane has weighed in on Stellenbosch FC's search for a new head coach, suggesting Gavin Hunt as a strong candidate to replace Steve Barker. Barker, who recently left the club for Tanzanian side Simba SC, departs after a notable run in the CAF Confederations Cup last season, leaving Stellies struggling in the Premier Soccer League.
Barker's exit comes at a challenging time for Stellenbosch. The club sits 14th on the 16-team PSL log, having collected only three wins in 14 matches so far this season. Ngubane believes the team's performance reflects more than just coaching issues, noting that the regular sale of top players to the highest bidders each season hampers the club's consistency.
Ngubane admitted surprise at Barker's move, questioning whether leaving Stellenbosch was the right decision. He highlighted the pressures African clubs place on foreign coaches and urged that Barker ensure his technical team is not left behind. "The reason Simba opted for him is because of his good record. Even last season, he finished in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup," Ngubane told KickOff.
According to Ngubane, Barker's ability to develop lesser-known players made him a unique asset to Stellenbosch. He suggested that whoever is responsible for producing talent for the first team, such as the DDC team coach, should be considered for promotion. "His departure is going to hurt Stellenbosch a lot because Steve Barker could work with unknown players," Ngubane said.
When discussing possible replacements, Ngubane singled out Gavin Hunt as an ideal candidate. Hunt, who previously faced an unfair dismissal at Durban City, has a strong track record and is experienced in working with young talent. Ngubane emphasized that if Hunt is allowed to operate freely and integrate youngsters into the squad, he could successfully stabilize Stellenbosch.
"I like the fact that Hunt is now using youngsters. He would be a good replacement for Steve Barker," Ngubane added. He also defended Hunt's previous coaching record, arguing that being fired for losing to Orlando Pirates was unjust given the club's dominance in South African football.
As Stellenbosch FC seeks to recover in the PSL, Ngubane's endorsement of Hunt highlights the importance of experience, youth integration, and technical knowledge. The club's next appointment will play a key role in shaping their fortunes for the remainder of the season.
