'Use Army engineers to build roads, save money' - Ahiagbah tells government

Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party, Richard Ahiagbah

The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party, Richard Ahiagbah, has called on government to make better use of the Ghana Armed Forces' Engineer Regiment to help build and repair roads across the country.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Mr Ahiagbah said the country could save significantly on road construction costs if it relied more on the expertise of the military engineers.

"What I worry about is the cost of our roads," he said. "We have the Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, and I don't understand why we cannot leverage their expertise to cut down costs so they can fix some of the roads. It will take nothing from them. They have the competence to do any road. If anyone can do bridges or complex works, they can do it."

He argued that while the military is not engaged in any active combat, its technical skills and logistical capacity could be put to good use in national development.

"They have the skill, we have sand, quarries, and cement being produced in the country. It will be a good effort to bring all these together to reduce the cost of road construction and help us build more roads," he added.
