Edendork proving that their squad is more than their county stars, with supporting cast taking centre stage against Dromore

Stephen Corr, Rian Nelis, Jake Ferguson and Patrick McLernon starred for St Malachy's in their round one win

Edendork are no longer dependent on their county stars for leadership and inspiration, and with waves of self-belief sweeping through the entire team, they made a big statement with a thrilling Tyrone SFC win over Dromore.

Darren McCurry, Niall Morgan, Conn Kilpatrick and Ben Cullen are the big-name players in the collective, but manager Brian McGuckin is still delighted with the manner in which others stood up at clutch moments and struck telling blows.

"Traditionally, Edendork would have struggled without their county men in the early rounds of the league," he said.

"That was a big target of ours, for players to stand up and show that they're capable of performing at this level.

"Obviously Darren, Niall, Conn and Ben are a massive part of our team, but we're not solely dependent on them, and I think we proved that.

"We weren't waiting for Darren or Niall or Conn to come on to the ball to finish a move, we had a great variety of scorers, but we also had confidence in players to step up and take those scores - Stephen Corr, young Rian Nelis, Jake Ferguson, Patrick McLernon, they all kicked wonderful scores while under pressure."

Attacker Patrick McLernon was one of the stand-out stars of the St Malachys' 2-19 to 2-16 first round victory at Plunkett Park, striking a brilliant late goal to swing a tight contest in his side's favour.

"I'm delighted for Patrick, he has had a good league campaign, but the making of the man is how he performs in the championship, and we put that to him, and I felt that he really stood up and showed that he's capable of playing at this level."

A hard-fought encounter against one of the county's top teams, in the balance right to the end, sets a battle-hardened Edendork up perfectly for a quarter-final crack at Carrickmore on the weekend after next.

"There's no better way to go into the next round than playing such a complete team as Dromore," said McGuckin.

"We knew coming into the game that it was going to be a massive task, but we were up for the challenge, and I knew that coming down the strait, we had the work done, we had the potential to go on and win the game, and thankfully we had players that stood up and took the game by the scruff of the neck when it was needed most."

The Edendork boss was pleased with the composure shown by his players, who stuck to the plan even when the game was going against them at various stages.

They were two points down at half-time and went four behind before stamping their authority on the contest.

"They were five ahead at one stage, but we did show a lot of composure to come back into the game.

"That two-pointer that they kicked just before half-time was a bit of a sucker punch, but we recovered well and finished well.

"We fully knew that was going to be the case. I knew that we were going to create opportunities, but I also knew that they had the calibre to cause us a lot of bother, so we'll go back to the drawing board and look at how we can improve going forward."

And a thunderous finish, with McLernon's excellent solo goal and a Darren McCurry two-pointer, sealed the deal.

"Dromore are very well set up defensively, so we had to work really hard to create scoring opportunities, but we have good pace in our team, and we felt that if we could isolate, create one v ones through good movement, that we had opportunities to go past them and create chances.

"And thankfully it dd open up in the second half, it probably opened up for both teams, but we took our chances."
